Match Result: Warwickshire won by 7 wickets. Warwickshire 22 points, Somerset 4 points.
Warwickshire were again without Wright and Rankin and
after Somerset chose to bat, it was Patel who took the only two
wickets to fall before lunch, Abell and Bates.
After the interval Woakes’ burst of 3-14 in four overs, saw him
remove Cooper, Hildreth and Trego, while Patel completed his
five-wicket haul as Somerset lost seven wickets in the session.
A last wicket partnership of sixty four between Bears’ old
boys, Thomas and Groenewald, helped Somerset close on 265
and by stumps on the opening day, Warwickshire were 22-0 in
reply.
Trott’s work and that of Ian Westwood (66 from 175 balls,
four fours) and Sam Hain (an unbeaten 78 from 145, 11 fours)
suggested that Somerset’s 265 all out on the first day was an
under-achievement in decent batting conditions. But the visitors
stormed back in the last session when Overton and Alfonso
Thomas took five wickets in ten overs with that new ball.
Warwickshire advanced to 66 before Chopra, guided Overton
to gully and then Evans fell to Allenby. Westwood inside-edged
Thomas on to his stumps, bringing together Trott 87 and Hain.
They added 82 in 31 overs before Somerset, belatedly took the
new ball and Overton then inflicted considerable damage with it,
removing, Trott, Clarke and Woakes.
Barker followed, but Hain completed his half-century, as
Warwickshire closed the second day on 319-8, leading by 54.
Next morning, Hain completed an unbeaten 103, his sixth
career century, to give a first innings lead of 100 with Overton
taking 6-74, before Somerset’s second innings, collapse, saw
them dismissed for just 170 as Abell batted through the innings
for 88, for a second time in five weeks.
Aggressive seam-bowling from Clarke 4-43 and the spin
of Patel 4-47, left Warwickshire a victory target of 70 and they
reached six without loss before rain took away the last 15 overs
of the day.
The home side lost Chopra in the first over and further wickets
at 35 and 36, but then advanced to the target with 73 overs to
spare, completing back-to-back victories for Warwickshire, with
Evans unbeaten on 36.
Chopra’s lean streak continued when he edged Thomas to
Allenby at first slip but the Bears had all the time in the world -
and they took it, Evans taking 25 balls to acquire a run as they
scored just eleven from the first ten overs.
Westwood and Trott departed leaving Evans to see
Warwickshire home.
