Match Result: Warwickshire won by an innings and 17 runs. Warwickshire 22 points, Worcestershire 4 points.
Worcestershire’s skipper Daryl Mitchell could probably reflect at
the close of the opening day as to what might have been, after his
side squandered a strong position at the start of the last over before
lunch on 104-1, to collapse to 243 all out before tea, whilst having lost
four wickets, including the fluent Moeen Ali, for just twenty two runs
either side of the interval.
Winning the toss Mitchell and Ali played some delightful off-side
shots adding 66 for the second wicket before Warwickshire’s seam
attack of Barker 4-65, Wright 3-63 and Rankin 2-47, assisted by a
series of poor shots, ripped through the home side’s batting. Only
Clarke in his second LVCC match offered resistance with a half
century, before Worcestershire hit back after tea, through Leach 3-27,
reducing Warwickshire to 35-4, until an unbroken partnership of 66
between Bell 46* and Ambrose 31* levelled the session off with,
Warwickshire closing on 101-4 trailing by 142 runs.
The second day, which was to prove to be the final day, belonged
to Warwickshire and in particular Ian Bell, after he had reached his
half century with a late cut off the first ball of the day and despite
losing overnight partner Ambrose in the same over, then added
135 with Clarke 67 as he completed the fiftieth first-class century
of his career just before lunch. Both Bell 111 and Clarke were lbw
to Shantry in the afternoon, but when Warwickshire were finally
dismissed at tea, they held a useful first innings lead of 97.
Two wickets in Wright’s second over heralded things to come as
Worcestershire began their second innings removing both openers
and when Ali and Fell were bowled the writing was on the wall.
Barker 3-26, Rankin 3-23 and Wright 2-14 were almost unplayable
as the inexperienced Worcestershire batsmen collapsed against the
continuous pressure from the Warwickshire seam attack. Patel picked
up a couple of late wickets but the damage had already been done,
as the home side totally capitulated with an abject display of batting,
being dismissed in less than one session for just eighty, leaving a
jubilant Warwickshire side victors by an innings and seventeen runs.
