Match Result: Match drawn. Warwickshire 11 points, Middlesex 10 points.
Rain prevented any play until mid-afternoon on the opening day
and after winning the toss and fielding, Middlesex through Finn,
picked up three early wickets, with Chopra, Javid and Webb on
debut, all going to close-in catches, two at short-leg to the diving
Robson and another to a one handed swoop at slip by Rayner.
An unbeaten partnership of ninety two for the fourth wicket
between Trott and Evans then took Warwickshire to stumps on 148-3
after both batsmen had battled hard to keep the Middlesex attack at
bay throughout much of the final session.
Resuming on the second morning, Trott edged a lifting delivery
from Roland-Jones to the keeper for forty five but Ambrose 20 and
Clarke 15 gave good support to Evans who was unluckily bowled by
Finn with the second new ball when just two short of a century.
Patel 37 and Barker 37 threw the bat, particularly against
the gentle off-spin of Rayner picking up four sixes before the
Warwickshire innings finally closed on 342.
With the light deteriorating, Wright trapped Burns lbw but Robson
and Compton batted through to an early close without further loss,
when Middlesex were 39-1 at the close of the second day.
With more rain and bad light again causing delays and
interruptions, Warwickshire’s bowlers worked their way through the
Middlesex batting on the third day after Wright had Robson caught
at slip, a partnership between Compton and Morgan looked to
be putting the home side into a strong position, but Clarke ripped
through the middle-order and other than some late resistance from
Dexter and Roland-Jones Middlesex were dismissed for 260 trailing
by eighty two.
With a draw beckoning, Warwickshire slipped from 125-3 to 187
all out after Chopra made a half century and a late order partnership
led by Patel added sufficient runs to tip the balance in favour of the
draw. Roland-Jones took four wickets to leave Middlesex chasing
270 from fifty four possible overs.
Robson and Burns posted an opening partnership of eighty but
Clarke and Rankin with two wickets apiece removed any possibility
of a Middlesex win and despite another late wicket from Patel,
Middlesex held on as the match faded into the predictable draw.
Both sides were left to ponder on what might have been had not
so much time been lost over the opening two days to rain and bad
light.
