Match Result: Sussex won by 1 wicket. Warwickshire 3 points, Sussex 19 points.
After choosing to bat Warwickshire were bowled out for 180
having been thirty five without loss, with Robinson 6-33, a career
best, taking the first six wickets to fall. The former Yorkshire
seamer had five by lunch – all taken in the space of 46 balls from
the Sea End as only Trott 35 appeared to be comfortable at the
crease until Jordan removed him, playing on attempting to pull.
Trott looked ruefully at the pitch as he departed.
Barker and Patel added a useful fifty nine for the eighth wicket
and a healthy supply of extras helped them reach a total of 180
as Magoffin took the last three wickets,
Sussex also got off to a solid start with forty six on the board
when Nash edged Clarke to first slip and Patel’s three wickets
before the close left Sussex on 140-5 at stumps with Wells
unbeaten on seventy three.
Sussex lost wickets regularly next morning session with Wells
finally being bowled by a shooter for ninety two as the innings
closed on 191 and a vital eleven run lead.
Westwood having been hit on the hand in the first innings
was unable to bat when Warwickshire’s second innings began
so Javid opened and Wright was promoted to bat at three. Both
Wright and Ambrose, needed treatment after being hit on the
helmet but with all batsmen finding runs at a premium on an
untrustworthy surface, Ambrose 32 top scored as Warwickshire
reached an early close due to bad light, on 180-7 leading by
just 169.
On the third morning, wickets continued to tumble as
Warwickshire were finally dismissed for 200 setting Sussex a
target of 190 for victory.
Wright ripped the top order apart with three wickets before
lunch, Nash Wells and Finch and when Clarke trapped Joyce
lbw with the first ball of the afternoon session and then had
Wright caught off an unplayable delivery, Sussex were 45-5 and
staring down the barrel of defeat, but wicketkeeper Brown 53
from 61 balls and Cachopa 20 decided to attack and with some
enterprising shots added fifty three for the sixth wicket.
Three wickets from Rankin seemed to have tipped the scales
in Warwickshire’s favour, but Jordan despite being dropped on
forty four, produced a superb display of clean-hitting to secure
the most unlikely of victories for the home side with just one
wicket in hand.
