Match Result: Match drawn. Warwickshire 11 points, Yorkshire 9 points.
Warwickshire travelled to Headingley to play the 2014 County
Champions, Yorkshire looking to avenge two innings defeats
at the hands of their opponents during the previous season.
Yorkshire were well below full strength with a number of their
regular side away with England in the Caribbean on Test Match
duty.
After winning the toss and batting Chopra’s fine edge
was taken by Hodd off the third delivery of the morning at
Headingley, while Porterfield survived a chance at slip off Fisher
before he and Westwood then batted through to lunch on 91-1
from 34 overs.
Bresnan struck immediately after the break when Porterfield
edged behind and Evans followed soon after, lbw to Patterson,
before Westwood, now partnered by Hain 50 completed his
century, adding ninety two for the fourth wicket, as Warwickshire
closed the opening day on 270-4 with Westwood unbeaten on
151.
McKay went early on the second morning, bowled by
Bresnan, but Westwood, now with Clarke, continued to play with
authority, until four short of a double century and having already
achieved a personal highest first-class score, was dismissed,
lbw to Middlebrook, his fiftieth wicket for Yorkshire.
As the lower order accelerated the scoring rate, Clarke 39,
Barker 27 and Patel 31, wickets tumbled and Warwickshire were
finally dismissed for 435 during the afternoon session.
In reply there was little early assistance for the Warwickshire
seamers, but Patel trapped Lees lbw on the stroke of tea and
in the final session, he and Rankin picked up further wickets,
before Yorkshire closed the day on 128-3 with Gale and Leaning
at the wicket.
Rankin, who had returned a personal best in the previous
match, took a further five wickets on the third day to close with
6-55 another best, as Yorkshire were dismissed for 303 with
skipper Gale top-scoring with ninety six.
Leading on first innings by 132, by stumps on the third day,
Warwickshire were 108-2 and an overall lead of 240 and on
the final morning, Westwood continued his run of form making
eighty four, while Middlebrook prospered from some attacking
play from the Warwickshire batsmen taking 5-82 before the
declaration on 219-7 with Clarke 36 and Hain 24 providing good
support to Westwood.
Yorkshire lost wickets in their chase for 352 to win, but Hodd
and Leaning batted for over two hours to secure the current LV
Champions a draw.
