Match Result: Hampshire won by 216 runs. Warwickshire 3 points, Hampshire 21 points.
Warwickshire went into this match looking to reduce the 34
point lead Yorkshire held at the top of the table, whilst at the
opposite end of the table, their opponents, Hampshire, needed
to maintain recent improved form and secure a much needed
victory in their efforts to maintain first division status.
Winning the toss and batting, Hampshire made an
inconspicuous start, losing opener Adams and Vince to Woakes
inside the opening five overs, before Carberry and Smith eased
Hampshire through to lunch without further mishap, on 61-2.
The pair were soon parted after the interval and Dawson
followed lbw to Clarke, but Wheater and Gatting who took
Hampshire to 146-5 at tea, while half centuries from Berg
and Wheater helped the home side reach 285 on the second
morning.
In reply Westwood went early to Edwards, but Chopra and
Evans added sixty two for the second wicket in thirty overs
before a disastrous 90 minutes saw Warwickshire lose nine
wickets for the addition of just forty seven runs as 18 year old
leg-spinner Crane and West Indian, Edwards, each took five
wickets, to dismiss the Bears for just 125.
With a lead of 160 Hampshire extended it to 242 with nine
wickets in hand at stumps on the second day with Carberry and
Vince looking in ominous form each unbeaten on thirty four.
The second wicket partnership amassed a huge 180 on the
third day, with Carberry falling nine short of a century, but Vince
was unbeaten on 125 when he declared Hampshire’s second
innings on 283-3 setting Warwickshire a target of 444 for victory.
By stumps Warwickshire’s hopes of achieving that unlikely
target were in tatters after being reduced to 161-6 having earlier
being 91-5 with a half century from Westwood.
With heavy rain forecast, and needing a victory to maintain
hopes of first division survival, all Hampshire eyes were turned
towards the gloomy skies on the final morning, when play
resumed.
Clarke 55 had added just two runs when he fell to Bird off
the fourth ball of the day and Edwards trapped Barker lbw in the
next over.
Edwards then removed Patel and the last wicket pair of
Woakes and Rankin survived fourteen overs before Smith had
Woakes caught leaving the home side victors by 216 runs as
the forecast rain started to fall, while the players were walking
off the field.
