Division One Liverpool Victoria County Championship 2015
A Hildreth century and another key innings from Trescothick
saw Somerset into a strong position at the end of the first day of
their match against Warwickshire at Taunton.
Needing seven points to guarantee his side’s First Division
survival, skipper Trescothick shared valuable partnerships with
Cooper and Hildreth, who ended the day unbeaten on 118, as
Somerset closed on 360 for five, collecting four of those precious
points in the process.
After a slightly delayed start, it was Trescothick who took
charge of the first part of the day after opting to bat first, while
Hildreth well supported by Allenby and Ronchi dominated the
latter stages of the day.
Leach claimed four wickets for no runs in the space of thirteen
balls to clinch First Division survival for Somerset on the second
day after Somerset clinched a fifth batting bonus point before
being bowled out for 438.
Warwickshire crumbled from 105 for one to 105 for six, giving
Somerset the two remaining bonus points they needed to be sure
of avoiding relegation.
By the time bad light ended play the visitors had moved on to
180 for seven with Patel on thirty seven.
Patel bowled Warwickshire back into contention on the third
day claiming 7-38 for 38 on a pitch offering increasing turn as the
hosts crashed to 110 all out in their second innings.
Somerset gained a first innings lead of 114 by bowling out their
opponents for 324, a fine recovery from 120 for seven, before
Patel fell two short of a century.
Set 225 to win, Warwickshire progressed to 20 for no wicket
with few alarms.
On the final day, the visitors were bowled out for 207, which
included 55 for Bell, with spinners Leach and Cooper taking nine
wickets between them to see the hosts to only their fourth win of
the season.
By lunch Warwickshire had moved onto 104 for five off 46
overs, with Bell unbeaten on 43 while Cooper had taken 4-13.
Leach struck with the first ball after lunch when he had Clarke
caught for five but wickets continued to fall with Bell 55 and Barker
46.
Patel took Warwickshire closer to victory, but on 27 he was
caught and bowled by Leach and the final wicket of the match fell
to Leach when he had Hannon-Dalby caught and Warwickshire
were all out for 207, giving Somerset victory by 17 runs.
