Match Result: Match drawn. Warwickshire 8 points, Nottinghampshire 12 points.
Any prospect of a positive result from this match disappeared
with the rain that limited play to just four overs in the opening
two days, as Nottinghamshire looked to overhaul Middlesex for
second place behind the Champions Yorkshire in the Division
One table.
Batting first, after Warwickshire had won the toss,
Nottinghamshire reached 16-0 in the four possible overs of the
opening two days, but James Taylor celebrated his Test recall
by England with an unbeaten century for Nottinghamshire on
the third day, scoring his 20th first-class century in an unbeaten
138 to steer his side away from the uneasy foundation of 46
for three to 254 for five when bad light lopped off the last 24
overs, on a day after Alex Hales recorded a rare failure against
Warwickshire, edging Barker to second slip for just six, bringing
his championship batting average against the Bears at Edgbaston
crashing down under 100.
Mullaney and Taylor followed cheaply before James Taylor and
Wessels added 58 for the fourth wicket.
Resuming after lunch Patel was bowled by Barker but Read
50* with Taylor added an unbroken 124 before the weather closed
in again.
After rain and bad light sent the match into its final day still in
its first innings, only collusion by the captains could salvage the
match from stale-mate.
But Nottinghamshire had made it clear overnight that they
were not interested in creating a contest. They chose to bat on
in pursuit of bonus points and were finally bowled out for 365 to
which Warwickshire replied with 187 all out.
In the morning session, Nottinghamshire added 110 for the
loss of three wickets with James Taylor. finally out for 149.
Patel dismissed Wood and Ball with successive balls to round
off the innings and reach fifty championship wickets for the
season in the process.
Starting their first innings with only 62 overs left in the
match, and the contest and their season dead as a doornail,
Warwickshire’s batting predictably lacked intensity.
They lost openers Chopra, lbw to Hutton, and Westwood
who edged Wood to become Read’s 1,001st first-class victim, in
successive overs, before. Evans and Trott added 59 until falling to
Fletcher and Ball respectively.
A great performance by Barker
Generating good pace from the Birmingham End, Ball worked
his way through the middle order to finish with four for 48 and
drive his team towards maximum bowling points which they
clinched when Wright offered Read catch number 1,002.
