Match Result: Yorkshire won by 174 runs. Warwickshire 3 points, Yorkshire 20 points.
Yorkshire won the toss and batted first at Edgbaston and
were soon in trouble against the opening seam attack of Wright
and Hannon-Dalby, with Rhodes, Leaning and Gale all out
cheaply, before Patel had Lees easily stumped by McKay.
Bairstow was joined by Australian, Finch and they added
seventy four for the fifth wicket before Clarke trapped Finch lbw.
As wickets continued to fall, Bairstow produced another top-
class innings, reaching his century after an hour’s delay for rain
and just before the Yorkshire innings closed on 213 with Wright
mopping up the tail to finish with 5-40.
When Warwickshire batted, they lost two wickets off the first
three balls from Sidebottom to leave then 11-2 overnight.
After just nine balls rain returned on the second morning and
with play resuming after lunch, Sidebottom ran amuck, bowling
Westwood not offering a shot and Evans, while Hain was caught
at slip and McKay was lbw.
When Brooks had Trott caught low at third slip, Warwickshire
on 35-7 had lost four wickets for no runs in eighteen balls and
it became worse when Patel edged Brooks to Bairstow on the
same total.
Rankin was the ninth wicket to fall, again to Brooks and with
Warwickshire 37-9, Clarke and Hannon-Dalby then put together
a partnership of thirty two, the highest of the innings, to avoid the
follow-on, before Patterson bowled Clarke to close the innings
on just 69 trailing by 144.
Lees and Rhodes made a careful start to Yorkshire’s
second innings reaching fifty eight before Clarke made the
breakthrough, but Rhodes and Leaning took Yorkshire to stumps
with the overall lead extended past 250.
Rain again interrupted play on the third day, but amidst the
showers, Yorkshire batted on, before declaring on 289-7, after
half centuries from Rhodes and Finch had helped them set
Warwickshire a target of 434 for victory.
Sidebottom trapped an out-of-form Chopra for a pair but Trott
and Westwood took the home side to the close without further
loss on 43-1.
Resistance on the final day, as Warwickshire chased an
improbable victory target, came almost exclusively from Hain
106, but with little support after Westwood’s early dismissal,
other than from Trott, Warwickshire succumbed quickly to
Sidebottom’s second five wicket haul of the match.
The veteran left-arm seamer bowled with real pace and
accuracy to bring Yorkshire a comprehensive victory by 174 runs
with time to spare.
