Match Result: Match drawn. Warwickshire 9 points, Sussex 9 points.
After Sussex won the toss and chose to bat, it took little time
for Warwickshire to realise they were going to be facing a long
period in the field as Joyce and Wells looked very comfortable
until Rankin had Joyce caught in the gulley for thirty.
Wells and Machan took Sussex to lunch on 90-1 but
Poysden on his LVCC debut, collected his first wicket after the
break, courtesy of a good catch from Wright to dismiss Machan
for twenty two. Wells completed his half century and added sixty
six for the third wicket until Wells looped an attempted pull to
Clarke off Wright.
This was the final success for Warwickshire in the day, as
Nash playing in his 150th first-class match, completed his first
century of the season and shared an unbroken partnership of
117 with Wright 43* as Sussex closed on 280-3.
On the second day Sussex continued to pile on the runs,
with Wright completing his century before Brown and ZaidI then
produced a partnership of 191 with both men also completing
centuries, only the second time in their history that Sussex had
achieved this feat before finally declaring on 601-6.
Magoffin struck quickly having Chopra 6 caught behind
by Brown and Javid followed without scoring pushing a wider
delivery tamely into third slip’s hands.
Just before stumps, Wells got one past Westwood’s defence
to trap the left-hander lbw for twenty, as Warwickshire closed the
day on 62-3, trailing by 539.
The third day saw Warwickshire bat all day adding 305 runs
whilst losing just two wickets after Trott and Wright extended their
fourth wicket partnership to 114 before Hobden got one through
Trott’s defence to bowl him for 68 immediately after lunch. Wright
completed his half century but drove Zaidi to give the bowler a
return catch for 65.
Evans and Ambrose then batted throughout the remainder
of the day, in an unbeaten partnership of 197 with Evans
completing his century and Ambrose sixty five at stumps when
Warwickshire were 367-5 still trailing by 234 but needing just
eighty five to avoid the follow-on.
The final day became somewhat academic once the follow-
on was avoided with Ambrose finally out for 153 having shared in
a sixth wicket partnership record of 327 for Warwickshire against
any side, while Evans remained unbeaten on a career best 213
when Warwickshire declared at 612-6 and the match was drawn.
Ambrose and Evans share a sixth wicket partnership of 327 runs
