Match Result: Nottinghamshire won by an innings and 123 runs. Nottinghamshire 24 points, Warwickshire 4 points.
With Varun Chopra injured, stand-in skipper William
Porterfield won the toss and elected to field against an in-form
Nottinghamshire side and was rewarded with the wicket of Taylor
before a huge second wicket partnership of 251 between Hales
189 and Mullaney 112, put the home side in complete command
by tea.
Scoring at over four an over, Nottinghamshire secured
maximum batting points closing the day on 404-5 and leaving
the visitors looking at chasing down a large first innings total.
Nottinghamshire took their first innings score to 600, their
highest total since 2007 on the second day with Read and Ball
leading the way.
In response, Warwickshire reached stumps on 100 for four
with Evans on 39 and Ambrose 18.
Earlier they were soon reduced to 10-3, as Ball, with two
wickets, and Wood, put them under early pressure.
Evans offered dogged defiance, broken up by two short
stoppages, and added an unbroken 59 with Ambrose, as
Warwickshire ended the day 500 runs adrift and still requiring a
further 351 to avoid the follow-on. They were finally dismissed
for 260, with Barker scoring 71 with Ball 3-35 and Hutton taking
3-73.
Enforcing the follow-on Nottinghamshire were left frustrated
as deteriorating conditions wiped out the final session of the
third day with Warwickshire 42 without loss when the first band of
rain drove the players off the field for an early tea and a total of
43 overs were lost.
Porterfield and Westwood had made steady progress in the
twelve overs that were possible with Warwickshire ending the
day still 298 runs behind.
In gloomy conditions, Porterfield frustrated the home
attack for more than four hours, in making 61, as the final day
developed into one of dogged resistance.
Wickets fell at regular intervals as Nottinghamshire chipped
through the middle-order but were then held up for more than an
hour before Patel immediately trapped Ambrose lbw and then
dismissed Porterfield.
Clarke and Barker resisted for more than 18 overs before
Barker clipped Mullaney to Wessels at short leg, who pulled off
an astounding reflex catch.
With the umpires repeatedly checking their light meters
Mullaney and Patel took the second new ball, with immediate
benefit as Mullaney had Patel caught at point by Taylor for 28
and then Patel finished the contest emphatically, trapping Wright
lbw before having Rankin taken at short leg secure victory by an
innings and 123 runs.
Barker’s 71 runs most in both innings
