Match Result: Warwickshire won by 181 runs. Warwickshire 21 points, Worcestershire 3 points.
Losing the toss and being put into bat at Edgbaston,
Warwickshire found progress difficult, losing both openers,
Chopra and Westwood in the first hour of play followed by
Porterfield before lunch when they were 70-3.
Evans completed his first Championship fifty since 2013
before pulling Leach to mid-on while Ambrose’s inside edge
removed his middle stump off the same bowler. Hain became
Leach’s fifth victim in the second over with the new ball after
making a confident eighty two.
Both Clarke and Patel quickly followed to the bowling of
Morris but Barker and Wright managed to take Warwickshire to
stumps on 258-8.
Next morning Worcestershire mopped up the remaining two
wickets for the addition of just six runs with Leach returning a
career best of 6-73.
The Worcestershire reply faltered from the start, after Wright
deflected Oliver’s drive into the non-striker’s stumps to run out
Mitchell he then removed Ali and Oliver while Barker yorked
Gidman for a duck and had Kervezee caught in the gulley by
Porterfield.
Five wickets down at lunch, Worcestershire’s brief resistance
from Fell and Cox was swept away by the seam attack of Wright,
Barker, Clarke and Rankin as they were dismissed for 149 from
just 42.5 overs.
By the close Warwickshire were 105-2, but Evans 16 edged
to second slip off Leach in the third over of the third morning
and with Hain absent with a dislocated shoulder, Ambrose 6
and Clarke 1, moved up the order but fell cheaply to Leach and
Morris as Warwickshire slipped to 125-5.
Barker 43 joined Chopra who completed his second century
of the season just before lunch, but then edged Ali to Cox first
ball after the break for 107.
Patel was stumped but an unbroken ninth wicket partnership
between Wright 61* and Rankin 55* his maiden half century,
added 114 before Warwickshire declared at tea setting
Worcestershire a target of 437 to win.
In the final session of the day, Worcestershire lost Oliver 33,
miscuing Patel and just before stumps. Moeen Ali was caught
behind off Barker for thirty three with Worcestershire closing the
day on 88-2.
On the final day night-watchman, Morris went early, but
Mitchell and Fell batted solidly until they fell within the space of
three deliveries immediately before lunch.
Patel 4-69 and Barker 3-42 did the most damage and with
Rankin and Clarke collecting wickets, combined with some smart
catching, Worcestershire’s resistance fell away and Warwickshire
ran out comfortable winners by 181 runs before tea.
