Division One Liverpool Victoria County Championship 2015
Durham CCC v Warwickshire CCC
at The Emirates, Chester-le-Street, 12-15th July 2015
Umpires:
G.Lloyd & D. Milns
Toss won by:
Durham who chose to bat
With, Wright, Rankin, Barker and Trott all absent for
Warwickshire, Durham chose to bat and Stoneman’s second
century in successive LV County Championship innings in a
stand of 153 with Borthwick took the score to 184 for one, before
a dramatic fightback from the seam attack, saw Clarke take
five wickets and Milnes three, as Durham were dismissed for
314 just twenty minutes before stumps. With four overs to bat,
Warwickshire reached ten without loss.
On the second day, In difficult conditions on a ground where
he scored a century last season, Hain top-scored with 57 as
Warwickshire replied to Durham’s 314 with 167 for seven on a
rain-shortened day.
Four of the wickets fell to Rushworth, who in the brief morning
session took three wickets in seven balls to have Warwickshire
rocking on 12 for three before Hain and Ambrose led a spirited
counter-attack as their fifty stand came up in ten overs.
There were two more rain interruptions before the fifth-wicket
pair departed in successive overs after tea, before bad light,
then drizzle, ended a day on which 43.3 overs were bowled.
Next morning Rushworth completed his fifth five-wicket
haul of the season, as the visitors were dismissed for 198 with
Durham taking the three remaining Warwickshire wickets for the
addition of 31 runs and securing a first innings lead of 116.
Bowling again, Woakes took advantage of morning cloud
cover in a spell of three for three in ten balls as Durham slipped
to 55-7 before Harrison’s half century supported by Pringle and
Rushworth helped Durham struggle to 148 just after tea setting
Warwickshire a target of 265 to win.
By the close of the third day, Warwickshire looked to be
on target for victory, with Evans unbeaten on fifty two after
Westwood and Chopra had been dismissed, closing on 125-3.
Wickets fell at awkward times on the final morning but with
only thirty eight needed at lunch with three wickets in hand
and Clarke at the wicket, the target appeared to be within
comfortable reach. Clarke’s dismissal off the first delivery after
the interval added to the pressure on Patel, 24* who was ably
supported by Milnes, 14* to carry Warwickshire home to a two-
wicket win.
In a similar situation at the ground two years ago he made
50 to get Warwickshire in sight of their 257 target before losing
by 11 runs.
This time he rode his luck, to see his side home.
