Match Result: Match drawn. Warwickshire 10 points, Middlesex 9 points.
There was no play possible on the opening day due to
heavy rain and after Middlesex won the toss and chose to bat, a
disciplined bowling performance helped them dismiss the visitors
for 207 with Patel taking the 18th five wicket haul of his career.
Middlesex raced to fifty in just twelve overs but then lost six
wickets for 62 runs, with Stirling hitting seven fours in his forty one,
but no-one else in the top order contributed.. Robson was lbw to
Clarke and, after Stirling edged Barker to slip, Rankin’s sixth ball
dismissed Malan and Patel’s second trapped Compton lbw.
Franklin was bowled by former New Zealand team-mate Patel
and when Barker trapped Simpson lbw, Middlesex were 114 for
six.
Dexter and Rayner added 51. But having completed a half-
century Dexter was caught at leg-slip off Patel. Harris bat-padded
the Patel to short leg before last pair Roland-Jones and Murtagh
added 22 to at least secure their team one batting point.
Warwickshire had ten overs batting before the close and
Middlesex turned to spin for the fourth and Rayner’s first ball had
Westwood caught behind to close the second day on 21-1.
Tim Ambrose displayed his ability to dig deep when his team
needs it most as he steered Warwickshire out of trouble on the
third day of their LV=County Championship tussle with Middlesex
at Edgbaston.
The third day saw Warwickshire in deep trouble at 86 for six on
a wearing pitch but closed a bad light-truncated day on 224 for
eight with Ambrose unbeaten on 84 as he with resolute support
from Barker and Wright, steered Warwickshire out of trouble.
Ambrose added 87 with Barker 30 and an unbroken 50 with
Wright before bad light lopped off the last 21 overs.
Trailing by 47 on first innings, after finally bowling the home
side out for 254 on the final morning, Middlesex were in jeopardy
at 105 for five on the final afternoon as spinner Patel got among
the wickets again on a turning wicket.
But Dexter again supplied the resistance his team required 43
to steer Middlesex towards safety at 173 for six and a draw which
strengthened their grip on second place in the Division One table.
In the end the loss of the entire first day to rain, allied to further
interruptions on the second and third days, took too much time
out of the game for either side to force victory.
