Second XI Championship 2015
NOTTINGHAMSHIRE 2nd XI v WARWICKSHIRE 2nd XI at
Ladybay, Nottingham, 1-3rd June 2015
Nottinghamshire 178 and 149-5 (21 points) beat Warwickshire
176 and 148 (5 points) by 5 wickets
Warwickshire were invited to bat against Nottinghamshire at
Ladybay on a day when conditions favoured the bowlers.
Leach went in the opening over, failing to score and Lewis
20 was bowled by Kitt before two wickets in seven balls
accounted for Mellor and Phillips, The more experienced,
Milnes and McKay quickly followed and as wickets fell at the
other end, only Lambert, unbeaten on seventy seven, stood
firm, with nine fours and a six before bad light brought play to a
halt with Warwickshire 144-6 from just forty one overs.
Poysden went without scoring on the second morning,
followed by Adair 8 and when Lambert’s innings finally came
to an end for ninety one, Gordon was soon dismissed as the
innings closed on 176 in the fifty third over with Hutton 3-26
and Kitt 3-39 the most successful Nottinghamshire bowlers.
Hannon-Dalby struck quickly when Nottinghamshire began
their reply, dismissing Root first ball and Dal in his second over.
Milnes chipped in with Wood’s wicket in his opening over, while
Hannon-Dalby took a third when he trapped Hutton lbw with
the first ball of his third over.
Wickets continued to tumble before Freeman 29 and Brown
53 helped the home side reach a first innings total of 178 and
a two run lead. Hannon-Dalby 3-15 and Milnes 3-39 were well
supported by Poysden 2-28, Singh 1-15 and Adair 1-18.
In their second innings, Leach 45* and Mellor 26 put on
seventy four for the first wicket before Mellor was dismissed
just before stumps when Warwickshire were 76-1 with a lead
of seventy four.
Leach went early on the final morning without adding to
his overnight score and from that point wickets began to
tumble as Tilcock 4-22 and Hutton, Webster and Brown with
two apiece ran through the middle order with only Simon
Lambert 21 with Lewis 15 and Hannon-Dalby 15 offering any
real resistance before the innings closed on 148 in the forty
seventh over.
Requiring just 147 for victory Nottinghamshire lost Webster
lbw to Hannon-Dalby early, but Wood 36 Hutton 36 and Will
Root with a half century took the home side to the brink of
victory before two late wickets from Gordon and one from
Singh came too late to prevent a five wicket victory for the
home side.
WARWICKSHIRE 2nd XI v LANCASHIRE 2nd XI at Coventry
and North Warwickshire CC, 25-27th May 2015
Lancashire 333-7 dec and 193-8 dec (13 points) tied with
Warwickshire 215 and 311-8 (13 points)
Warwickshire fielded one of their strongest possible second
elevens against Lancashire, but found the visitors in resilient
form after being put into bat with openers Procter and Hameed
posting a first wicket partnership of 101, until Milnes removed
them both in fourteen balls and Poysden trapped Livingstone
lbw without scoring.
Tom Smith fell to Gordon for thirty three, but Jones
continued to bat effectively, completing his century while
sharing in half century partnerships with Parry and Lamb
before becoming one of four victims for Poysden 4-53 as
Lancashire finally declared on 333-7 from ninety eight overs.
In reply, Coleman was dismissed quickly for four, but
Porterfield 55 and Lewis 41 then posted a century second
wicket partnership but Warwickshire then lost nine wickets for
ninety nine runs on the second afternoon. Thomason 26 was
the only other batsman to post a score as Warwickshire were
bowled out for 215 in the seventy fifth over. Mahmood 3-48 and
Griffiths 2-20 were Lancashire’s most successful bowlers.
There was time for almost twelve overs prior to an early
finish and Lancashire on forty four without loss, had extended
their overall lead to 162 with all wickets in hand going in to the
final day.
Hameed 35 and Livingstone 61 gave Lancashire another
good start to their innings but Milnes 3-37, Gordon 2-46 and
Adair 2-34 restricted them to 193-8 ahead of their declaration,
setting Warwickshire a target of 312 for victory from 75 overs.
Porterfield and Coleman started brightly, but two wickets
from Edwards in three balls removed Coleman 24 and Lewis
without scoring, but Webb joined Porterfield to reach tea on
144-2 from thirty eight overs.
Webb 52 and Porterfield 81 added ninety six for the third
wicket but after losing two quick wickets Milnes and Thomason
took the total on to 250 before Milnes and McKay went from
consecutive deliveries.
Thomason completed his half century and with one over
remaining Warwickshire needed sixteen to win and after failing
to score from the first two balls he went 6 2 6 from the next
three leaving two required from the final delivery.
He was run out off the final ball, going for a second run for
eighty from eighty four deliveries as the scores were level at the
close with Warwickshire eight wickets down.
Warwickshire collected 8 points for the tie plus five bonus
points while Lancashire had five for the draw and eight bonus
points, leaving both teams on thirteen points.
Three wickets for Milnes
Thomason run out off last ball
