Match Result: Birmingham won by 24 runs Birmingham Bears progress to semi-final.
For a second year running the Birmingham Bears
booked their place at the NatWest t20 Blast Finals Day
after knocking out Essex Eagles in the quarter-finals
although this time at Edgbaston.
Losing the toss and batting, the Bears after an
uncertain start made a useful 189 for five with Evans 50 from
31 balls and Woakes adding an unbeaten 48 from 24.
It was a difficult opening few overs for the Bears
losing Bell to Topley and an out of touch Chopra soon
after as Topley and Masters pegged Birmingham back.
Porterfield 23 but sliced Tait’s first ball to third man and
then Clarke lifted Ryan ten Doeschate to cover, with the
Bears 88-4.
Napier limped off having bowling only seven balls
and then Evans, on 14, was caught but reprieved
because Tait had overstepped.
He capitalised by thumping a quick 50 in a stand of
69 from 38 balls with Woakes, a late onslaught ensuring
Essex were left with a testing target.
The Eagles soon lost Pettini, caught at cover, and the
dangerous Ryder 26 followed to Rankin’s shorter ball.
As the required rate continued to rise, Westley 33
and Bopara 32 both lost their wickets leaving the Eagles
needing 69 from five overs which became 66 from four
after a superb over from Clarke.
When Clarke held a fine catch at long on to dismiss
ten Doeschate in the next over, it was all over for the
Eagles and the champions’ defence of their trophy
continued into Finals Day.
Crucial wicket Bopara goes for 32
