Match Result: Birmingham won by 60 runs Points: Birmingham 2, Derbyshire 0.
Chopra and McCullum put on 160 for first wicket
McCullum reaches his century
On his home debut, Brendan McCullum thrilled the
large, expectant crowd, with a tremendous 158 from
64 balls with 13 fours and 11 sixes, helping the Bears
reach 242 for 2 - their highest total in the t20 competition
format.
Derbyshire’s 182 all out in reply was a plucky effort
but predictably fell short as they had to go for broke from
the off.
The visitors won the toss and bowled, but doubts
soon set into their minds about that decision, when
Bears’ openers McCullum and Chopra had 50 on the
board in 25 balls. Finally adding 160 from 79 balls before
Chopra 51, was dismissed.
That was bad news for Derbyshire as McCullum
responded by moving into overdrive.
McCullum than went to his hundred, the first by a
Birmingham player in the tournament and to 150 in just
18 more deliveries and his unbeaten 158 equalled the
score McCullum made in the opening game of the IPL in
2008 and surpassed innings of 153 from Luke Wright and
152 from Graham Napier in English domestic t20.
Derbyshire gave their unrealistic chase a real go
attacking everything, but wickets fell regularly.
Four fell to Poysden but for fifty one runs, before the
Bears ran out comfortable winners by 60 runs.
