Match Result: Birmingham won by 1 run Points: Birmingham 2, Lancashire 0.
It was a dramatic evening at Old Trafford, after the
start had been delayed due to the late arrival of some of
the Bears’ players due to motorway traffic, the conclusion
more than compensated for the earlier frustrations.
On a slow wicket, the Bears won the toss and batted
first, with McCullum taking three successive fours off
Jarvis’s first over, before he was brilliantly caught for a
14-ball 18 when Croft raced to take a skyed catch off
Clark.
When Chopra holed out at long off the Bears were
69 for two in the tenth over and as fluent run-scoring
remained difficult on the wicket the trio of Lightning’s
spinners kept the Bears under restraint.
Porterfield was one of four wickets to fall in the last
two overs as the Bears innings ended on 137 for eight,
after Gordon hit the first six of the innings in the final over.
The Lancashire top order also struggled as Prince
and Brown were dismissed cheaply and Lightning were
only 32 for two after six overs and despite Horton and
Croft’s efforts the Lightning’s batsmen found fluent run-
scoring against spin quite as difficult as the Bears had
done.
Clark and Faulkner threatened to take the game
away from the Bears and even after Clark’s dismissal, off
Gordon, Davies kept up with the asking-rate of ten runs
per over.
Faulkner became one of Gordon’s four victims and
the Bears held on to restrict Lightning to win by just a
single run with Gordon taking 4-20.
