Match Result: Birmingham won by 6 wickets Points: Birmingham 2, Yorkshire 0.
The Birmingham Bears bounced back to winning
ways after the defeat to the Leicestershire Foxes with a
six-wicket win over Yorkshire Vikings at Edgbaston.
Yorkshire amassed 132 for seven, a workmanlike
affair including 53 dot balls and only eight fours. Jack
Leaning’s contributed a t20-best 45 (44 balls) but, on a
slow pitch, no-one achieved fluency against disciplined
bowling led by Recordo Gordon’s three for 30.
After early wobbles, Birmingham eased to victory
thanks to William Porterfield’s punchy 42 from 39 balls
and then a measured fourth-wicket partnership of 66
in 49 balls from Tim Ambrose (46 from 38) and Laurie
Evans (an unbeaten 32 from 25).
Choosing to bat first, Yorkshire lost four wickets in
the opening six overs. Clarke’s spell included the Bear’s
first t20 maiden for three years and the wicket of Gale,
while Gordon 3-30, then struck twice in his opening over,
dismissing Lees courtesy of a terrific catch by Ambrose
and Maxwell finding Evans at deep square leg.
Leaning, riding his luck, kept the innings together
after Finch fell to Poysden cutting. It was left to Leaning to
prop up the innings and with Bresnan, helped the visitors
limp to 132-7, before losing his wicket from the last ball of
the innings to a catch at long on.
Maxwell then took wickets in his first two overs
when Birmingham began their reply, with Bell bowled
attempted to cut and Chopra caught at mid-off.
Once again Porterfield 42, kept the Bears in the
chase and after losing his wicket to a mistimed pull off
Middlebrook’s long-hop, it was left to Ambrose and
Evans to confidently see the Bears home to victory with
a partnership of sixty six from 49 balls by a six wicket
margin.
