Match Result: Birmingham won by 1 run Birmingham 2, Northamptonshire 0.
Choosing to bowl, Northamptonshire might have
questioned the decision when McCullum, in his final
home match for the Bears, smacked four of his first ten
balls for four, but was then superbly caught at point off
Crook for twenty six.
Skipper Chopra’s 54 however, helped the Bears
reach a decent, but gettable total, and with the help of
Lewis 16 and Evans 20, the Bears reached 154-5 from
their twenty overs.
On a good batting track, the Steelbacks began their
reply as slight favourites but lost early wickets. Willey,
Duckett and Levi all went for big shots in the first six overs
and gave catches, the latter superbly taken by Lewis at
deep midwicket.
Another fine opening spell by Clarke increased
the required run rate while spinners Patel and Poysden
maintained the pressure to send Northamptonshire into
the last six overs needing sixty nine more to win with
skipper Wakely still there with an unbeaten half century.
This came down to twenty three from six the final
over and when Kleinveldt hoisted the first two balls into
the stands for six it was game on - but, with four needed
from the last ball, Gordon held his nerve, just, and
conceded only two to long-on to give the Bears a second
single run victory of the season.
