NatWest t20 Blast 2015 (North Division)
Leicestershire had not got back to Leicester from
their trip to Durham the previous evening until close to
3am, but looked keen enough, when, after choosing to
bat first, Birmingham lost captain Chopra to Raine’s first
delivery and in the following over, McKay, pitched one up
and McCullum mistimed an attempted drive straight to
mid-off for just six.
Clarke, in company initially with Lewis 13 and
then with Ambrose 34, steered Birmingham towards a
competitive score, hitting forty six from thirty six balls
before finally falling to Freckingham. Some late hitting
from Javid 28 then helped the Bears close on 160-8.
Clarke then produced the season’s most economical
figures of the competition bowling his four overs for just
ten runs and picking up the wicket of opener Eckersley,
whilst keeping Leicestershire in check, but with Cosgrove
going strongly in company with Elliott, they looked to be
favourites with five overs remaining on 111-2, needing
just fifty to win.
But once Elliott, fell to Gordon, the required rate kept
rising until it was beyond the home team’s reach and
Cosgrove’s innings ended in the final over, run out for
seventy four when Leicestershire needed nineteen to win.
The result left Birmingham top of the North Group,
virtually guaranteeing qualification for the quarter-final
stages of the competition.
