Dell scoring 103 in a strong counter attack from 4 wickets
down. In reply, the Warwickshire batsman set up the game
with attacking batting of their own, particularly against the
Worcestershire spinners. Steven Sandhu scored 88 and
Austin Crump 62 in a stand of 134 between them. Sanjay
Sharma (56*) and Daniel Brosnan (24*) finished the innings
well, and with some interruptions for rain, Warwickshire
declared in an attempt to move the game forward towards
a result. The Warwickshire bowlers struggled to wrestle any
control in the 2nd innings, although left arm spinner Charlie
Morris took five wickets and leg spinner Luke Jones took
two. Worcestershire declared to set the Bears 280 to win.
Four Warwickshire batsmen made it in to the 20’s or 30’s
but no-one went on to build an innings or partnership to
threaten the winning score. With so many players absent
due to other cricket, this was an excellent match for those
on the fringe of the squad to impress, and many did just
that.
1-day match vs Moseley CC (Moseley CC)
Warwickshire won the toss and elected to field
Moseley CC – 179 all out
Warwickshire – 181 for 4
Warwickshire won by six wickets
Many thanks to Moseley CC once again for hosting us in
a pre-season warm up match. Leg spinner Luke Jones took
6/27, and Academy duo Rob Yates (50) and Liam Banks
(43) put on 95 in the opening stand, the former playing
against his own club.
Another wicket to celebrate
Under 19’s Report by Paul Greetham
1-day match vs Devon Lions (Exeter CC)
Warwickshire won the toss and elected to field
Devon Lions – 210 for 8
Warwickshire – 192 for 4
Warwickshire won by 6 wickets (D/L method)
On a rain affected day, Devon Lions looked in trouble at
74/7 before their lower order moved the innings forward and
took advantage of some sloppy late innings bowling and
fielding from the Bears. Jack Twigger was the pick of the
bowlers, swinging the ball late with 1/15 from 10 overs. The
D/L calculations and frequent rain delays made the chase a
little more challenging for the Bears, but significant innings
from Jim Clifford (51 opening), Robbie Povey (20* from 12
balls) and particularly from Matthew Lamb (62*) saw us
home with a few balls to spare.
1-day match vs New South Wales Schools
(King Edwards School, Birmingham)
NSW Schools won the toss and elected to field
Warwickshire – 162 all out
NSW Schools – 125 all out
Warwickshire won by 37 runs
Dampness and conditions ensured this was a low
scoring affair with the ball dominating the bat. This said,
at 89 for 2 having been put in to bat, Warwickshire looked
in good shape to score well into the 200’s to set a very
challenging total. As expected, the Australians had a great
deal of depth in the bowling attack and regular wickets led
to an underwhelming 162 from the Bears. Opener
Hamza Ahmed top scored with 32. The NSW batsmen fell
at regular intervals with Jack Twigger (3/31), Ben Brookes
(3/26) and Michael Waugh (2/14) the pick of the bowlers.
t20 matches vs Cheshire Development XI (Elworth CC)
Game 1
Cheshire won the toss and elected to bat
Cheshire - 156 for 3
Warwickshire – 133 all out
Cheshire won by 23 runs
On a small ground and good pitch, the game was set
up at 92 for 2 for Warwickshire to win, with Andy Umeed 31,
Ed Pollock 34 and Matthew Lamb 28 all looking set and in
match winning form. The last four wickets fell for one run.
Game 2
Warwickshire won the toss and elected to bat
Warwickshire - 156 for 7
Cheshire – 124 all out
Warwickshire won by 32 runs
Almost the reverse of the first match. Andy Umeed
(69 off 55 balls) and Oliver Haley (49 off 25 balls) set the
foundation for a competitive total, with Jack Twigger the pick
of the bowlers with 3/27.
Unfortunately, the 1-day match vs a Staffordshire
Development XI and a t20 day (two matches) vs
Worcestershire were abandoned due to heavy rain.
A good season with the ball for Twigger and Jones
