Obituary Alexander Davis
ALEXANDER EDWARD DAVIS 1923-2015
Warwickshire’s former 1st team scorer, Alex Davis, sadly passed away after a lengthy illness in October 2015 at the age of 92.
Alex was associated with Warwickshire cricket from the junior levels right through to 1st team cricket as well as scoring regularly
in the Birmingham & District league. He was also called upon on many occasions to score for England both home and away.
After starting his scoring duties on the Edgbaston Colts ground with the Warwickshire Colts team he progressed to eventually
become 1st team scorer for more than 10 years, retiring from the position at the end of the 1998 season. In 1994 Alex was in
the Caribbean with England when he recorded every single run scored by Brian Lara in his Test Match record breaking 375 in
Antigua, only to follow this two months later by recording every run in Lara’s momentous 501* against Durham at Edgbaston.
A quiet, modest and humble man, Alex was appointed as a Club Vice President in 1998 in recognition of his services and
remained a devoted follower of Warwickshire cricket throughout his life. It was a mark of the high esteem in which Alex was
held that his funeral at Robin Hood cemetery was attended by so many Warwickshire cricketers from across the generations
who came to pay their respects to a wonderful man and a great ambassador for the game in this County.
