CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
The work of the Warwickshire Old County Cricketers’
Association goes on all year but it is mostly through the
month so of the cricket season that many of the members
get together.
Following the success of the inaugural event in May
2014 the County Club once again decided to hold a
Community Open Day at Edgbaston, with many activities
taking place around the stadium and concluding with a t20
cricket match between a Warwickshire Legends XI and a
Combined Services XI to highlight the work of Fisher House
in supporting the families of injured servicemen and women.
It was great to get such wonderful support from many of our
former players including Dougie Brown, Neil Smith,
Asif Din, Alan Richardson and David Banks. It was especially
pleasing to welcome Willy Morton back to Edgbaston to
play in the game when he travelled down from Scotland to
meet up with many of his colleagues. Willy played for the
Bears in 1984-1985 and it was a great pleasure for him to
“wear the Bear on his chest” for one last time. It is difficult
to stress how much these players from years gone by
truly value their association with this great Club long after
their playing days are over and what a very special place
Edgbaston is for so many.
Also during the month of May the Association held
its annual general meeting at Edgbaston and coincided
this with taking in some cricket during day three of the LV
County Championship match against Worcestershire. It
was good to see many familiar faces during the day and
as always the County Club, through the offices of Club
Chairman, Norman Gascoigne and Chief Executive,
Colin Povey, provided marvellous hospitality in the
Committee room which was enjoyed and appreciated by
all present. There can be little doubt that Warwickshire
provides support of its Old Players’ association to a level
which is unparalleled on the domestic County scene.
WOCCA’s President in 2015 was Dennis Oakes, who
had the honour of hosting his own President’s Day lunch
in the Committee Room on Sunday 19 July. We had the
pleasure of welcoming 30 or 40 members of the association
to an excellent lunch – many of whom were able to bring
along their wife or partner to enjoy the day and enjoy the
atmosphere of Edgbaston on a sunny afternoon. Once
again the County Club continued to excel in providing warm
and genuine hospitality for all those present.
On October 23rd the Association held its annual golf day
and dinner- allowing many former players to get together in
the autumn at Edgbaston Golf Club before returning back
