Primary and Secondary School Cricket
Primary School Cricket
The WCB utilised Chance to Shine funding and support
to run a very successful schools coaching, competition and
cricket development programme. Cricket was delivered
to 140 primary schools, 65 Secondary Schools. Primary
schools competed in over 70 Chance to Shine and Kwik
Cricket festivals run across the county, as well as 40
teachers attending cricket for teachers courses held at
Edgbaston. Schools also competed in other competitions
such as the Lord’s Taverners’ Hard Ball and Indoor
Tournaments. Across schools coaching and all competitions
and festivals it means that over 6000 children experienced
cricket thanks to the Chance to Shine programme.
The winners of these competitions are below:
These sessions were delivered by full time coach
Alex Roslyn and part time coaches Chloe Hill,
Gagandeep Singh, Nick Gessey, Mike Brookes, Laura Crofts,
Khalid Sadiq and Anthony Kilroy, Matt Dutton,
Nathan Edwards and coaches from Complete Cricket.
A credit must go to all the coaches for the high standard of
schools coaching and festivals this year.
We were very lucky to have three Chance to Shine
ambassadors Tammy Beaumont, Lydia Greenway and
Jenny Gunn accompanying WCB coaches into many
schools such as Langley primary, Bishop Challonor,
Lordswood and Tudor Grange, as well as Berkswell and
Barford Primary schools amongst the lucky few!
Tammy, Lydia and Jenny’s support with coaching,
training teachers and delivering assemblies has been
outstanding. Their enthusiasm and love for the game has
seen them become immensely popular figures within
various schools around Warwickshire. They have offered
expert advice to children, signed countless autographs
and answered hundreds of questions. We are very grateful
for all their help and hope they will play a major role in the
development of cricket throughout Warwickshire.

Secondary School Cricket
It’s an often quoted mantra that cricket in state schools
is dying out and not played. The table below paints a
slightly different picture with the results of 24 finals that were
through the spring and summer of 2015 being noted.
The various competitions are run by School Sports
Associations run by volunteer teachers and supported by
the WCB. In total over 80 secondary schools take part in
one or more of the competitions which is approximately
50% of the Counties secondary schools. The changing face
of cricket is demonstrated with the Birmingham Schools
Super 8 s competition – 8 a side/8 overs and played in an
hour – perfect for the sports teacher with 3 or 4 year groups
to look after.
We have been supported throughout 2015 by Chance to
which has enabled us to deliver coaching and after school
clubs in 65 secondary schools. The programme covered
all aspects of the game including umpiring, scoring and
leadership.
2015 has proven to be a successful year for cricket in
schools all over Warwickshire.
Warwickshire Cricket Board Indoor Finals
Edgbaston County Ground was the host to this year’s
secondary school indoor cricket finals. Across the county
there were 30 schools that entered the competition and the
best of these teams were invited to compete for the title
of county winners. Games were extremely close between
schools with most games being decided on the last over of
the game, the final results are detailed below:
