SHIRLEY GRIFFITHS 1930-2015
The death has been announced of former Warwickshire player Shirley Griffiths at his home in Southport, Lancashire at the age
of 84.
Born in Barbados in July 1930, Shirley played in twenty seven first-class matches for Warwickshire between 1956 and 1958.
A right arm fast bowler, he played three first-class matches in 1956, all against non-county sides, whilst serving his qualification
year. His first-class debut was against Cambridge University at Fenners in June 1956, returning his season’s best of 4-31.
He took eleven wickets in his three appearances.
He made his County Championship debut in 1957 against Leicestershire at Edgbaston and took the first of his four career, five
wickets or better in an innings returns, against Oxford University in May 1957 taking 5-39. In all he took twenty eight wickets that
season in eleven matches.
In 1958, in what was to be his final season as a first-class cricketer, he played thirteen matches taking thirty five wickets with a
best of 7-62 against Kent at Edgbaston in June.
As a batsman he made just seventy six career runs in twenty six innings, twelve of which he was undefeated.
He left the staff at the end of the 1958 season and played no more first-class cricket.
