Warwickshire CCC Academy Report by Paul Greetham
Tom Banton made his debut in the 2nd XI this season
in one day and three day cricket at the age of 16 as a
wicket keeper batsman. Like Liam, Tom was selected in the
Midlands regional team in the ECB National Super Fours
as well as the Invitational ECB XI in September to play the
MCC.
Marie Kelly continued her development at Loughborough
University and was again a member of the ECB U19
Women’s squad.
Matthew Lamb broke through in to the 2nd XI this season
following an outstanding year in the U19’s, scoring three
half centuries and two centuries. On debut for the 2nd XI
vs Worcestershire, Matt scored an unbeaten 146, following
that up with 99 vs Gloucestershire in the next 2nd XI
Championship match. Although not on the contracted staff,
Matt has been given the opportunity to train and play with
Warwickshire during winter 15-16 and in the summer 2016
season. He will also attend the Tom Maynard Academy
training camp in Feb/March 2016.
George Panayi was another young player who made
his 2nd XI debut in 2015. It was a tough first outing vs
Yorkshire away, however a successful one in that the team
won and George took three first innings wickets including
that of overseas international player Glenn Maxwell. Earlier
in the season, George took the new ball for the England
U17 XI that faced Pakistan in the UAE, and George has
been invited to the England Development Programme U19
training during winter 15/16 as the U19 squad prepare for
the World Cup in Bangladesh early in 2016. George was
also awarded the Neal Abberley Trophy for outstanding
contribution to Warwickshire youth cricket.
Michael Waugh is still a member of the Scotland
Development Squad, and had an outstanding season in
U19 cricket for Warwickshire, taking 39 wickets with his off
breaks.
Congratulations to Sukhjit (Sunny) Singh, a left arm
spinner who has been awarded an Academy Development
Contract for 2015-16. Sunny attended the pre-season
Barbados trip with the professional squad as well as the
Tom Maynard Academy earlier in the year. He has also
been awarded an ECB Scholarship and grant to attend
the Darren Lehmann Academy out in Adelaide between
October 2015 and March 2016.
Robert Yates was selected for the ECB Midlands region
for the 2015 Bunbury Festival at Malvern College, and
subsequently gained selection for the combined Midlands/
North team which took on the West/London and East team
at Loughborough in September. Robert, as an U15 top
order batsman, made his debut at U17 and U19 level this
season.
Academy contracted players for 2015, Andy Umeed and
Mark Adair have gone from strength to strength performing
well in 2nd XI and U19 cricket. Aaron Thomason has
struggled with injury preventing him bowling a great deal
– but his batting has developed exceptionally well in 2015.
Andy scored 346 2nd XI Championship runs (with a high
score of 164*) plus over 200 runs in 2nd XI one day and t20
cricket. He also dominated the few U19 matches he played,
scoring over 500 runs and three centuries. Seam bowling
all-rounder Mark took 24 2nd XI Championship wickets plus
a further 16 in one day and t20 cricket. Aaron represented
England at U19 level in Australia earlier in the year scoring
three half centuries in the ODI series. He scored 282 2nd XI
Championship runs for Warwickshire including a high score
of 145, and a further 185 runs in one day and t20 cricket.
Academy Development Contracts in 2015-16 have been
awarded to Sukhjit Singh, Mark Adair and Ed Pollock,
with Matthew Lamb also been invited to train with the
professional squad. Selection of these Development
Contracts as well as for the WCCC Academy reflect the
priorities of the Director of Cricket in terms of succession to
those in the professional squad.
